Discover the workshop

In June 2024, the Denver Theatre District (DTD) hosted a collaborative workshop with Jann Haworth at The Emmanuel Art Gallery, bringing together local artists, honorees and community members to initiate the stencil making process. Jann demonstrated her technique of enlarging a photograph of a headshot, carefully cutting away sections to form a stencil. Once completed, the stencil was placed onto a piece of paper, secured with tape, and painted over. When the stencil was lifted, the design was revealed with sharp, clean edges where the paint had passed through the cutouts, creating a crisp, graphic quality that captured the essence of the portrait.

Collaboration is central to this work, reflecting the shared contributions that bring the project to life.

As Jann Haworth explains:

“Catalysts is a celebration of each of the individuals represented and of the collective community, telling a story of the meaningful - and sometimes invisible - connections between and among us. The meaning of the artwork is layered. What do we see when we experience art? What do we not see? Questions like ‘Who gets to make art?,’ ‘Who gets to be in a museum?,’ and ‘Is collage proper or fine art?’ are all embedded in this project."
